The CX-5 has a standard Secondary Collision Reduction System, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Outlander doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the CX-5. But it costs extra on the Outlander.

The CX-5’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Outlander’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are over 81 percent more Mazda dealers than there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the CX-5’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Mazda vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mazda third in reliability, above the industry average. With 95 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is ranked 30th.

The CX-5’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 13 more horsepower (187 vs. 174) than the Outlander’s 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The CX-5 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Outlander; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The CX-5 has engine speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Outlander doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the CX-5’s wheelbase is 4.2 inches longer than on the Outlander (110.7 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

The CX-5 has 1.2 inches more front hip room and 1.1 inches more rear headroom than the Outlander.

The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Outlander with its rear seat up (33.7 vs. 10.9 cubic feet). The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Outlander with its rear seat folded (66.5 vs. 64.3 cubic feet).

The CX-5’s power window, power lock and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Outlander’s power window and power lock switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The CX-5’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Outlander ES’ standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the CX-5 Premium Plus has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Outlander doesn’t offer cornering lights.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 Mazda CX-5 retains 57.6% of its original value after 5 years, significantly more than the 48.85% resale value of the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander after five years, which can save the Mazda’s owner up to $2964 in depreciation.

The Mazda CX-5 outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by over three to one during 2025.
